Character History:

Over the Garden Wall follows the adventures of two brothers, Wirt and Greg, as they try and find their way home from “the Unknown”, the mysterious setting they find themselves lost in. Early in the series, they attract the attention of Beatrice, a bluebird. In the first episode, Wirt and Greg find a homestead belonging to the Woodsman. Beatrice, who lives in the Woodsman’s barn, takes notice of them at this time but doesn’t make contact with them. In the second episode, Beatrice finally introduces herself- she pretends to be stuck in a bush, and allows herself to be “rescued” by Greg. She tells Greg that, since he rescued her, she owes him a favor. This favor is to bring Wirt and Greg to Adelaide of the pasture, a witch who she assures them can help them find their way home. Unfortunately for Greg and Wirt, she was leading them into a trap.

Before Greg and Wirt appeared in the Unknown, Beatrice was a young girl. She threw a rock at a bluebird, and was thereafter cursed- not only did she turn into a bluebird, but all of her family turned into bluebirds as well. Upset at her fate and ashamed that her family had to suffer for her misdeeds, Beatrice found a solution to her problem when she made a deal with Adelaide of the Pasture. Adelaide offered Beatrice the use of a pair of magic scissors that can turn her and her family back into humans, if she was willing to bring her a child servant. For several episodes, Beatrice actively kept Wirt and Greg at arm’s length, pretending not to feel any connection to them (in order to make fulfilling her promise to Adelaide easier). However, after she and Wirt are trapped in an armoire together and end up bonding and sharing personal histories (including how Beatrice became a bluebird), she begins to admit to enjoying Wirt and Greg’s company. When the group finally gets close to Adelaide’s house, Beatrice begins to be overcome with guilt, so she leaves under cover of night to talk to Adelaide. Beatrice offers herself in place of the brothers and Adelaide refuses. During this confrontation, Wirt and Greg (who had followed Beatrice) enter the cottage and are trapped in Adelaide’s “web” of yarn. Beatrice opens a window, letting in cold air and killing Adelaide, but in the excitement Wirt was able to free himself (using the magical scissors) and escaped.

After that point, Wirt and Greg wander off alone, Wirt hurt by Beatrice’s betrayal. When wandering alone, Wirt eventually loses hope and begins to fall prey to the main villain of the series, the Beast, and Greg attempts to sacrifice himself to save Wirt. While this is happening, Beatrice continues to look for Wirt and Greg in order to apologize. She finds Wirt first, shivering in the snow. She brings him to where her family is living (a nest inside of a tree), and goes off to find Greg. Her family nurtures Wirt back to health and asks him nervously whether he’s seen her. Soon, Wirt leaves to find his brother, and Beatrice literally flies into him and tells him that she’s found Greg.

Abilities/Special Powers: No powers, but she is a cursed person/bird, so there’s that.

Third-Person Sample:

The Unknown isn’t exactly a normal place, so Beatrice isn’t a stranger to the… well, strange. However, she isn’t exactly a fan of new things. She likes to know everything that’s going on around her and she likes to know that she is in control of absolutely anything and everything. So, when she awoke to find herself in a strange oak tree in a strange forest facing a spooky mansion, she wasn’t exactly thrilled.

She flew erratically for a few minutes, screaming for help at the top of her lungs, before she started to calm herself down and really think. Where is she? Where is Wirt? She had “run” into him just moments ago (at least, flown into him). He’s gotten into the habit of leaving at the most inopportune times, she really needs to talk to him about that when she finds him.

Well, it’s more likely that she’ll find help in the creepy mansion than in the creepy (and also abandoned) forest. She flies to the door and realizes she can’t realistically lift a knocker (sometimes lacking arms and weighing only an ounce is really inconvenient), then starts frantically pecking at windows. Someone has to be around in this gigantic and creepy mansion, right? Hopefully they aren’t some weird people who eat bluebirds or… something else like that.

First-Person Sample:

[Wow, what Beatrice wouldn’t give for arms right now. She’s flying around, pecking randomly at windows and flapping her wings so hard she could create a small whirlwind. Finally, she finds an open window on the third floor and makes herself at home. She’s flying around the room, taking it all in, when the wall unit turns on all by itself. It manages to record her talking to herself like a madwomanbird.]

Okay, Beatrice, you can handle this. You’re just stuck in a creepy mansion in the middle of a completely unfamiliar forest where there is no escape. You’re probably going to die, but whatever, it’s not like life is that great anyway, death can’t be much worse. Oh well. That’s it, you’re going to die here, completely alone and hated by everyone who loves you. I’m sure when someone eventually DOES open that door, they will be some sort of deranged killer and they’ll try and bake you into a pie or something. Would bluebirds even taste good? WHY ARE YOU THINKING THIS NOW? I guess I could claw at their eyes?

New Third Person Sample

It's notoriously difficult to tell time in Wonderland, but with the chill in the air, Beatrice can tell that Christmas is fast approaching. With the onset of the Christmas season, she's feeling her family's absence more acutely than usual. She remembers the rhythm of her dog's chest rising and falling as she rests her head on it, and she remembers the smell of burning wood in the fireplace. She can hear her younger siblings running around with their new toys- they were always modest toys, but her brothers and sisters appreciated them all the same.

Here in Wonderland, she doesn't really have a family. She has Wirt and Greg, though, and that's something. Even letting them this close to her has been a struggle. Beatrice used to be a bit more open to other people, but since cursing her family, she's once bitten twice shy. Who would want to get close to someone who only brings misfortune wherever she goes? Who would willingly be cursed? True, she's a girl again now, but it still remains- who would want to be the friend of someone who is nothing but trouble? It's best to keep others far away, to avoid that moment when they realize who you really are.

She's lying to herself, of course. Beatrice misses that closeness more than she can possibly describe. Lying on her bed and staring at her toes peeking out from under her flannel covers, she thinks about these memories, and then thinks about what her family must be up to now. Are they safe? The winter is never kind in the Unknown. But, she can't let anyone see her being this sentimental. She swings her legs over her bed and heads out the door, hoping to catch Wirt or Greg awake.

New First Person Sample

[Beatrice fumbles a little when turning on the communication device. It's a lot easier to operate now that she's a girl again, but she's still getting used to using fingers and hands again. She feels so out of practice!]

So, everybody, I've been wondering.
I know we have magical closets or some weird thing, can we get living things out of those closets? I just want my dog back. I want something furry that won't say anything stupid. God knows, Wirt doesn't satisfy either of those requirements. If anyone can help, let me know. I'd rather socialize with my dog than about 90% of you.

[And on that rude note, Beatrice is out.]
